Culture Map Plotter

Help improve this tool

Think of one culture you know well from living or working in it, and place it on each scale below. There are no right answers: your experience is the data. It takes about five minutes, and you can come back to rate another culture afterward.

This is the one place on the site that sends anything. Only what you submit here is sent, nothing else is recorded, and you may skip any question. A name or email is optional and is never published. Answers may be summarized in teaching or writing. Prefer paper? Print the one-page worksheet.

Setting you have in mind

Drag each slider to where you would place the culture. The middle means mixed, or it depends. A scale stays unplaced until you touch it, and you can clear it again.

1. Communicating

Not placed yet

Low-context. People say things plainly and explicitly. What is said is what is meant.

High-context. Much is understood from setting and relationship, and left unsaid. People read between the lines.

2. Evaluating

Not placed yet

Direct negative feedback. Criticism is blunt and honest, and not taken personally.

Indirect negative feedback. Criticism is softened, hinted at, or passed along through someone else.

3. Leading

Not placed yet

Egalitarian. The leader is first among equals. Titles and rank matter little.

Hierarchical. Status and rank are respected. The leader stands clearly above the group.

4. Deciding

Not placed yet

Consensual. Decisions come from group discussion and agreement.

Top-down. The leader decides, and the group follows.

5. Trusting

Not placed yet

Task-based. Trust comes from reliable work, and is built quickly.

Relationship-based. Trust comes from time together, shared meals, and a personal bond.

6. Disagreeing

Not placed yet

Confrontational. Open disagreement is healthy and is not personal.

Avoids confrontation. Open disagreement harms relationships, so it is handled quietly.

7. Scheduling

Not placed yet

Linear-time. One thing at a time. Punctual, and the agenda is followed.

Flexible-time. Plans adapt. People and relationships can interrupt the schedule.

How sure are you of your placements overall? (1 = mostly guessing, 5 = very sure)
